Granite worktop maintenance

Granite is a 100% natural material with a unique colour and beautiful pattern. Granite quarried in various locations worldwide is used for manufacturing worktops. We cut it in a suitable size, after which its edges and surface are finished. Granite worktops are durable, heat resistant and last for decades when regularly and properly maintained.

Daily cleaning

For the daily cleaning of your granite worktop, we recommend using damp (microfiber) cloth, warm water and, if necessary, either a neutral (pH 7), mild alkaline (pH 8-10) or mild acidic (pH 4-6) detergent. Look for cleaning products especially designed for natural stone and avoid using highly acidic or products containing bleach.

Abrasive materials can also easily damage stone surfaces – a scourer or a grain of sand in the washcloth may cause micro-damage.

Preventing and removing stains

Be sure to protect granite surface from staining and take special caution with worktops made of light rock. Whenever possible, avoid spilling chemicals and corrosive substances on the worktop. Also, keep in mind that metal objects may easily scratch polished and leathery surfaces.

The best way to avoid staining is to immediately remove any dirt from the worktop, so that it does not dry and get absorbed in the stone. Usually it is sufficient to use a paper towel, water and a suitable detergent to clean the surface.

The longer the spills remain on a granite surface, the more likely it is subject to heavy staining. In case of heavy staining, we recommend using special cleaning products designed for natural stone. After using the cleaning product, we recommend to wash the worktop again with clean water and the detergent.

Avoiding heat damage and scratches

Although granite is quite scratch resistant, we still recommend using cutting boards. Constant cutting without a cutting board will damage both knives and worktop, causing tarnishing and increasing the risk of staining.

Granite is very heat resistant, but we still recommend using special trivets for kitchenware taken straight from the oven or cooktop. These will also prevent potential damage to the worktop caused by rough-bottomed clay pots.

Long-term maintenance

In order to ensure long-term use, all surfaces are processed with special sealants. This helps to avoid absorption of liquids inside the worktop, thus also preventing potential staining. Based on the type of granite and frequency of use, we recommend re-treating worktops with a special sealant for natural stone surfaces at a 1-2 year interval. Light granite surfaces should definitely be treated once a year; darker surfaces in every 1-2 years.
